My Southern Experience

Hi ya'll!

While I'm embarking on my Southern adventure this fall and spring, I will be keeping my friends and family updated with this blog! I will try to post quite often, but don't fret if you don't hear from me. As always, I am going to be busy running around doing things!

See that little red A dot? That's where I'm going. Middle of no where. Western Kentucky. Just across the Tennessee line, bordering on Missouri. So what the hell am I going to do there?!

Well, I am primarily here to finish the last four courses of my BSc. Biology degree. I have been sent to Murray State University on an exchange from the University of Calgary, and will be gone from January until the middle of May 2013. Once I am finished my semester here at MSU, I will attain my degree in June back in Calgary (finally!).
For all you fellow science nerds out there, I'm taking senior courses in wetland ecology, wildlife regulations and policy, herpetology, and histology. These courses are aimed toward my main interest of fisheries and wildlife biology, while still creating a well-rounded scientist that will hopefully set me up for success as a professional.
Murray State is known around the south for having a high standard for education, while maintaining a small town feel. I am very excited to be part of small classes, with copious amounts of hands-on and field experience, and working closely with world renowned biology professors.

Secondly, I chose to go to Kentucky because it's always been on my bucket list to explore the south part of the USA. While I'm here, not only do I want to see the Kentucky skies, but the hills of Virginia, peaches down in Georgia, the coasts of Carolina, the prairies of Tennessee, the rising stars in Nashville, beaches of Florida, beads in New Orleans...the list goes on and on, but I'm not sure how much I can fit in during my short stay!
Jumping at this opportunity will create the experience of a lifetime and I think I'll be talking about it for the rest of my life. I can tell that coming here will open so many doors, create opportunities, form friendships, and most of all teach me a lot about myself.

I can't thank my family and friends enough for their love and support when I told them about my decision to come to Kentucky. I will miss all of you so much, and I hope this blog helps us connect! Hopefully I can make you chuckle a time or two with my crazy hillbilly stories from down here ;)

Sending my love back home,

Elle the (wannabe) Southern Belle
